Southeast Asia has earned its reputation as one of the world's best regions for beach holidays, and for families specifically, the combination of affordable luxury, warm waters, and welcoming cultures is hard to beat. But not every beach destination in the region is equally suited to travelling with children. Some are geared toward backpackers and nightlife; others are simply too remote for comfort when you've got a toddler in tow.
Bali, Indonesia
Bali remains the region's standout for families. The southern areas of Seminyak, Sanur, and Nusa Dua each cater to different family styles. Sanur is calm and traditional, with shallow waters ideal for small children. Seminyak offers a more cosmopolitan feel with excellent restaurants and private villa options. Nusa Dua is the resort zone — manicured, predictable, and very child-friendly.
The island's infrastructure is better than most of its neighbours, with reliable hospitals, international schools, and an enormous selection of accommodation. A family of four can rent a three-bedroom pool villa in Canggu for around $120 per night in shoulder season, which is remarkable value by global standards.
Phuket and Koh Samui, Thailand
Thailand's two most popular islands offer different flavours of family travel. Phuket's west coast — particularly Kata and Kata Noi beaches — has gentle waves, good lifeguard coverage, and restaurants that cater to international tastes without sacrificing local flavour. Koh Samui is smaller, quieter, and better suited to families who want to slow down.
Thai hospitality is genuine and children are treated with warmth everywhere. Healthcare is excellent, especially in Phuket, where international hospitals like Bangkok Hospital Phuket serve the expat and tourist community. Flights from most Asian and European capitals are direct and affordable.
Hoi An, Vietnam
Hoi An doesn't get mentioned as often as Bali or Thailand in family travel circles, but it deserves to. The town itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site with lantern-lit streets and wonderful street food. The beach at An Bang, just a short bicycle ride away, is long, uncrowded, and backed by a handful of excellent restaurants.
Accommodation in Hoi An is astonishingly affordable. A four-star beachfront resort runs around $80 per night, and a private villa with pool can be found for less. The pace of life is gentle, the locals are among the friendliest in Southeast Asia, and the tailoring shops are a bonus for parents who want something made to measure while the kids splash in the pool.
Palawan, Philippines and Langkawi, Malaysia
For families who want something more adventurous, Palawan offers jaw-dropping scenery. El Nido and Port Barton are stunning, though they require more logistical effort to reach. Langkawi, by contrast, is easy — a short flight from Kuala Lumpur, duty-free shopping, cable cars, and calm beaches that are ideal for young swimmers.
Both destinations are less developed than Bali or Phuket, which is part of their charm but also means fewer medical facilities and less reliable infrastructure. For families with very young children, that trade-off matters. For those with older kids who enjoy a bit of adventure, it's precisely the point.
Southeast Asia offers something for every type of family traveller. The key is matching your family's needs — not just your Instagram aspirations — with the right destination.
